This is a strategy to help students engage with an extended piece of text when reading.
Scan: Students should read through the text or scan through it if they have the necessary skills to take in the content of the text.
Underline: After reading the text, students should scan through it. As they do they should underline what they consider to be the key pieces of information. (You may wish to use a highlighter instead of underlining as this helps the text to standout).
Box: The final stage is to look at the underlined text and draw boxes around the keywords within these statements.
The aim is that this information can then be easily identified to support following activities.
