Vocab Snowball

Students are given a word and write down what they think the definition is. They then compare and revise definitions in pairs and groups before feeding back to the class.

Using a combination of individual and group work allow pupils to explore the meanings of subject terminology with this starter.

Launch Resource

The aim of this exercise is for pupils through discussion to identify the meaning of key words.
Pupils will be given a key word and a pen/piece of paper.
Individually they have 90 seconds to write down what they think the meaning is. A timer is available on the resource for this.
They then join together in groups and have 90 seconds to compare their work and decide on the definition. A timer is also available on the resource for this.
This is then repeated in groups.
Finally the groups feedback the definitions to the class.
Don’t have an interactive whiteboard….
Use a stopwatch to time each activity and countdown how long is left.
