What’s missing?

Students listen to a piece of text and write down what they think is missing. They then compare with a partner, amend if necessary and feedback to the class.

Test pupils listening skills through reading text with extracts missing. Their challenge is to listen and identify them.

Launch Resource

This exercise can be used for encouraging pupils to develop their listening skills as part of a plenary. They listen to a piece of text and try to identify what is missing.
Select a piece of text and remove an important section.
Read the text (or ask a pupil to) and the pupils have to identify what is missing.
Pupils will then discuss what they think is missing by working in pairs.
Finally pupils feedback their answers and the class assesses this. This should allow for a group discussion.
Be aware that this is an activity designed to focus on the pupils and not teacher talk. Be concise in your explanation of the activity.
